The importance of learning a second language from childhood
While I was in the shower I had the epiphany that if I had learned English since I was a child I probably would have graduated by now, It has been scientifically proven that from the age of 4 is the appropriate age for the quickest and most natural acquisition of a second language, because knowing a second language not only makes you bilingual, being able to communicate with people from other countries and have more job opportunities, but it has many other benefits that many people don’t know. Learning a second language is one of the best ways to become ''smarter'' because it influences cognitive, physical and emotional development allowing us to better develop our skills.
Learning a second language influences cognitive development. Builds a base for learning, learning English from an early age lies in the facility that children have to absorb and assimilate information because at this age the development of the brain and therefore learning is enhanced which is ideal for building the bases of learning. Stimulates creativity and problem-solving skills, by not understanding an accent or a sentence they have to solve it alone to continue and then they will put it into practice in other life situations. It improves attention and trains the mind because they must work with more information by keeping the languages separate and using it at the right time. It improves the ability to retain, children do not ''learn'' but acquire naturally which makes their progress is accelerated. Learning a second language brings many benefits for cognitive development.
Learning a second language also influences physical development. If children learn a second language from an early age, it will influence the development of their vocal tract because it will develop in such a way that as time goes by they can be more flexible and have excellent pronunciation in both their mother tongue and their second language. Contributes to brain elasticity, while children store information in the same neuronal area, adults need two different neural areas which make the learning process difficult. These are characteristics in physical development that a child who did not learn a second language from an early age will not have.
And finally, it also influences emotional development. It helps to become more aware, tolerant and open-minded, as the child will grow up knowing that not everyone is the same and will be respectful of people from other cultures and their beliefs. It will also make them more confident, it strengthens the personality since the language is learned without fear and thus they acquire greater security for the future, practice makes perfect and children are not ashamed when they make a mistake in public, so they will speak and practice and when they grow up they will not be ashamed to speak another language. And finally, it improves the development of social skills, because they will be more fluid as they will have more confidence in themselves and because by knowing a second language they are breaking the cultural gap and they can relate to people inside and outside the country who speak another language because they will be able to communicate perfectly. In this way, it contributes to the emotional development of children who learned a second language in childhood.
There are many ways to develop our skills and intelligence in today's world, and one of the most important is learning a second language from childhood, because by influencing cognitive, physical and emotional development, it will have a great impact on the lives of the children who learn it and the people around them, improving their quality of learning in other areas and the quality of life in the future.
